friday night, we went on a double date with ty and sierra to biltmore fashion park to see a free movie in the park! i have known for about 2 years that in the fall they show old movies each friday night, and i always wanted to go. we finally got ourselves over there, and i am so glad we did!
everyone brings their blankies, picnics and a lot of people bring their dogs!
ty and sierra brought Mac along, and he was so excited to meet little dog friends.
the movie showing on friday was “Young Frankenstein”…ha! i had seen it before, but it was fun to see it outside, wrapped in blankies, hearing a lot of people laugh at all of the good parts. i highly recommend this film!
i think this week’s film is “Bye Bye Birdie” so try to get out there and see it, if you can!
we are for sure going next Friday to see “The Great Gatsby”…because you all know how much I LOVE that book. one of my favorites of all time. and i have never even seen the movie! for shame.

Wow, this looks SO amazing! I’ve always wanted to go to something like this. It looks so cozy and fun!

I didn’t know there was a “The Great Gatsby” movie. I should see it. Though, I have to confess, when I read the book I didn’t understand it. I have to read it again. I don’t think I was paying much attention to it when I read.

In all my boredom and due to the fabulousness of your writing, I clicked back to 2006 on your blog to “see how it all began.” You have a post with your Moms last name, so I just thought hmm.. wouldn’t it be funny if Lauren still had her maiden name on facebook, if she’s even on there. Sure enough, there you were and I recognized the picture from your blog.

I know. I seem like a huge creep but last names are just more fun when they are known… but only by non-stalkerish people.

A lame but happy accomplishment of yesterday. My friends were dying to know too… ha.

If it’s the version with Robert Redford…it’s not that good. Robert Redford was not a good pick for Gatsby – he’s too much of a guy’s guy for the character. Mia Farrow is just annoying as Daisy. I love the book; Fitzgerald is one of my favorite authors. A&E did a version like 8 years ago that was pretty good.

Hi Lauren!! I just discovered your blog and I’ve really enjoyed purusing it a bit. I think you are very honest and real, and I’m looking forward to keeping up with you.

Also, regarding your “honest” post (I guess I’m going against your wishes here since you didn’t leave that post open for comments, buuut), I just wanted to tell you I think you’re VERY beautiful, but I know what it’s like to hear that all the time and still not really “feel it,” especially after washing off the makeup and removing all the outward things that make you feel more confident. Lately I’ve been really working on confidence, because it’s one of the most beatiful things a woman can be. Our men are so turned on by it! I recently wrote a post on what I feel beautiful is, if you’re ever interested in checking it out.

The city where I live, Portland, Oregon, is known for being rainy. Like, ten months out of the year. So when July and August arrive the town goes a little crazy.

It’s as if no one’s ever seen sun before. The citizens madly scurry about like hyperkinetic beavers, painting their houses, filling potholes, constructing new buildings, and generally creating noise and congestion everywhere. Not a weekend goes by without some major thoroughfare being shut down for a parade, a walk to benefit a popular disease, a “fun run” (two words that just don’t go together in my mind), a street fair, or a multicultural hoe-down featuring local blues bands and patchouli-scented hippies on bicycles.

In other words, summer here sucks.

There’s one shining exception, though: Summer means free movies. It’s become quite the vogue, in Portland and elsewhere, to project films out-of-doors, and each year my city is awash in free open-air screenings. Theater attendance may be down, but it would seem that people still love to watch a free movie with their butt crammed into a lawn chair.

Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays are the most popular nights for outdoor flicks. This can lead to scheduling conflicts, especially if you have a fetish for family-friendly fare. Last year, for example, Bee Movie was shown at Holly Farm Park on the same night that The Goonies — a perennial local favorite, because it was shot here in Oregon — was playing downtown in Pioneer Courthouse Square, with the suburbs offering (oh dear lord, no) Daddy Day Camp. If you’re scouting out free flicks to take in with your kids, the best way to choose one is to simply figure out what’s closest to your house. Unless it’s Daddy Day Camp, in which case you’d have more fun staying home, locked in your dark basement, smacking yourself in the head with a rock.

Other nights, the choices are a little tougher. The Wizard of Oz or Shane? Hairspray or The Princess Bride? Dirty Dancing or Enchanted?

As I’m both a lover of movies and perpetually broke, the idea of gratis outdoor films delights me. But just because you don’t have to buy a ticket, that doesn’t mean they don’t come with a cost. Hell, even free, some aren’t worth the price — you couldn’t pay me to watch The Water Horse: Legend of the Deep again under any circumstances, much less while swatting mosquitoes.

Then there’s the production of getting to the park/square/plaza/arts center with your folding chair, snacks and other accoutrements, and staking out a decent place to sit. By “decent,” I mean “not in the direct line of jackholes who’ll talk, wrestle with potato-chip bags, jabber on their cellphone, or otherwise ruin my movie.” Nine times out of ten, I find myself smack in the exact geographic center of several overlapping circles of unsupervised children, all of them bouncing off the back of my chair like sugar-fueled pinballs. I find squirt guns come in handy when this happens.

And while you’d think that being in the the Great Outdoors would allow one to, say, enjoy a smoke while watching the film — something that’s no longer an option in indoor venues — you’d be wrong. God forbid you should light a cigarette within 20 yards of an entitlement-queen soccer mom’s lil’ Honor Student. Apparently there isn’t enough fresh air in the world to stave off an immediate asthma attack of epic proportions, followed by the onset of early-stage tuberculosis. (And yes, I’m aware of the probable hypocrisy of my outrage over cellophane and cell phones while insisting that other people tolerate my cigarette smoke. Like most folks, I believe that my habits are benign, while others’ are an offense to God and man. Let’s just call it an adorable quirk.)

But the inconveniences are sometimes more than worth it. The suburb where I live just released their summer movie schedule, and among the offerings are Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit, Kung Fu Panda, and Wall-E. I may even head to the park for Journey to the Center of the Earth. I’ve never seen a 30-foot-tall Brendan Fraser in a city park in 3-D before. Now that’s worth the price of admission.

Check out our guide to some of the hottest outdoor movie screenings in LA going on right now.

Devil’s Night Drive-In
Write a Review

240 W 4th St, Los Angeles, CA 90013 (map)

Once upon a time, there were these things called drive-in movies. These theaters are now practically extinct, but Devil’s Night Drive-In recreates the nostalgic experience. Located on a rooftop in the heart of Downtown LA, the Devil’s Night screenings take place bi-monthly in the summer, and monthly during the rest of the year. You’re welcome to bring all the food and drinks you want (including alcohol). Although if you prefer a more authentic experience there are car hops on roller skates available to bring you popcorn, hot dogs and other theater snacks. If you don’t have a car or don’t feel like dealing with one, they also have an Astroturf area for walk-ins/bike-ins. Screenings include “Grease 2,” “Rushmore” and “Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark.”

Or perhaps you’d rather see a cult classic such as Pulp Fiction or The Goonies?
St George Open Air Cinema

The St George Open Air Cinema has stunning views of Sydney Harbour and the Sydney Opera House. At times you’ll be more inclined to watch the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Opera House than the movie itself!

In all seriousness, it is one of the most sublime ways to spend a summer evening in Sydney.

The cinema itself is located at Mrs Macquarie’s Chair in downtown Sydney. It has a nice mix of Hollywood’s new releases as well as old favourites such as Casablanca.

The restaurant and bar serve food, alcohol and coffee from 6:15 pm each night. Currently you are not allowed to bring your own food and drinks into the St George Open Air, although you can do this at the Moonlight Cinema in Centennial Park (reviewed below). Movies start at about 8:30 pm.

The St George Open Air Cinema is one of the most popular outdoor cinemas in Sydney, so tickets often sell out before each night’s screening. However, a small amount of tickets are set aside each night for those without pre-booked tickets. You will need to queue up for these tickets – a small inconvenience. Tickets are around $20 AUD.
Sydney’s Moonlight Cinema

The Moonlight Cinema in Sydney is situated in beautiful Centennial Park. Although the view is not quite as stunning as at the St George Open Air Cinema, the Moonlight Cinema has a much more relaxed atmosphere.

This is because you can often buy tickets on the night (which allows you to be spontaneous!) and you are allowed to bring your own food, alcohol and picnic blanket. You can even bring a dog, if it’s well-behaved! There are food stalls on site if you wish to buy dinner or snacks.

The Moonlight Cinema screens a nice blend of new releases and old favourites or cult classics, such as The Goonies or Stand By Me. Tickets for the Moonlight Cinema are about $15 AUD – about the same as at the nearby multiplexes.
Other outdoor cinemas in Sydney

There are other outdoor cinemas in Sydney, such as the Starlight Cinema at North Sydney Oval, and the Open Air Cinema at Bondi Beach.

In my opinion, the best outdoor cinemas in Sydney are the St George Open Air Cinema for its fantastic views of the harbour, and the Moonlight Cinema at Centennial Park for its picnic-style atmosphere.

I hope you enjoy your experience at one of the fantastic outdoor cinemas in Sydney.

Kicking off the second annual “Stars under the Stars” movie series at Sundance Square in Fort Worth will be a free screening of Hairspray, the movie based on the broadway musical based on John Waters’ campy original film. (Pause for breath). The date: Thurs., June 12.

The show – to be projected on a 50 x 40 ft. outdoor screen – starts at dusk in the Chisholm Trail parking lot (at Fourth & Main St.); gates will open at 7 p.m. if you want to get there early and grab a prime viewing locality. All Sundance Square lots and garages (it says here) will be open for free parking after 5 p.m.

No coolers are allowed, but beverages (and food!) will be hawked by on-premises vendors for your potential partaking pleasure. Movie-goers are encouraged to bring their own folding chairs or blankets for sitting purposes.

Upcoming shows on the “Stars under the Stars” screening agenda include Ghostbusters on June 19; Gremlins on June 26; Apollo 13 on July 3; and Spiderman on July 10.
